Top 15 Most Useful amiibo Figures

7. Link

Link amiibo

The often misnamed Hero of Hyrule—Link—has more amiibo than any other character. Every 3D outing he has ever had is represented in amiibo form, even Wolf Link, but he isn’t included as part of this listing. There’s even an 8bit Pixel Link and a toy-esque Link from Link’s Awakening. He is compatible with so many games it’s impossible to list, but most notably he unlocks tunics in Breath of the Wild based on the figure you scan as well as Epona, a Mii Suit in Mario Kart 8, the sword-copy ability in Planet Robobot. Like Ganondorf, Link will unlock Epona in your Animal Crossing New Leaf town. She is notably missing from New Horizons, but you will usually have a green hat or two across other games. Link amiibo are notably sporadic in price, depending on your favourite the pricing can range from £10 to £18 with a lot being in . I would recommend the Super Smash Bros figure as it offers better rewards for Breath of the Wild but you can’t really go wrong with any version.

6. Yoshi

Yoshi amiibo

Yoshi has 6 unique amiibo, two of them being the expected Super Smash Bros and Mario versions but thanks to Woolly World there are 4 yarn amiibo to collect too. These yarn amiibo function identically to the standard figures so they can be used in their place if you’re looking for a more cuddly friend for your shelf. Within the Yoshi games the amiibo will unlock a second character to assist you within the levels as well as being compatible with all the usual Mario game suspects such as Mario Party, Tennis and Kart. Yoshi amiibo do range quite drastically in value, the figurines costing the low ends of £10-12 and the yarn amiibo ranging from £28-65 on the second-hand market.

5. Toad

Toad amiibo

Now we’re into the final five, and likely the most surprising entry here is the mushroom man himself, Toad. You know what to expect at this point from a Mario series amiibo, but notably within his own game Captain Toad Treasure Tracker this amiibo unlocks the ‘find the pixel Toad’ mini game in the WiiU version and makes Toad temporarily invincible in the Switch and 3DS versions. Toad usually sells for about £10 on second-hand markets.

4. Bowser

Bowser amiibo

The big bad himself, Bowser, has 4 amiibo figurines— one being the Skylanders compatible figure (if you have Skylanders on a Nintendo platform anyway). Notably, in Super Mario Odyssey scanning a Bowser will show you where any remaining purple coins are in the world, and in Bowser’s Fury he is used to instantly summon Fury Bowser into the fray to speed up the completion process. As well as just being a very well-made and great-looking figure, Bowser is a great companion to Mario and/or Peach as they work across most of the same games. Bowser typically sells for about £8-18 on the second-hand market too.

3. Peach

Peach amiibo

The Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach Toadstool, is one of the most iconic females in gaming and due to that has been used to unlock cosmetics based on the character across a large number of fashion-orientated games as well as working across very amiibo compatible Mario title. Notably, in Super Mario Odyssey she will grant the player an extra heart item and her Cat Peach variant will grant the player an instant power-up in Super Mario 3D World. Princess Peach’s cat form is available in a bundle with Cat Mario on the My Nintendo Store for RRP.

2. Luigi

Luigi amiibo

Being the brother of the most iconic character in gaming has its perks, which grants Luigi the second place prize on this list despite only having two figures to call his own. He works in every game that Mario does with a few exceptions (3D World and a handful of small Japanese exclusive titles) but will grant you the Luigi outfit for free in Super Mario Odyssey, a full life restore once a day in Luigi’s Mansion, and many, many green hats. Luigi can usually be found for £10-12 on second-hand markets.

1. Mario

Mario amiibo

Let’s face it, you already knew this before clicking on the list. Mario needs no introduction, typically if a game supports any amiibo beyond the game’s series, Mario will be compatible in some form whether that is unlocking fire abilities, red hats, invincibility, or much more. There are quite a few variants too, Super Smash Bros, Mario series, two 8bit Mario Maker figures, Wedding Mario, Cat Mario, and even a silver and gold variant (that cost far too much when most games won’t even recognise the sheen). You cannot go wrong with a Mario, just pick one and scan it into any game that supports amiibo and about 75% of the time it will work and do *something*.

And that’s my list, these are definitively the most useful amiibo and the ones you should look for if you’re new and want the most from these figurines. What is your favourite amiibo functionality? Be sure to send us pictures of your collections to Underlevelled on twitter!
