The Best and Worst of Each Species in Animal Crossing

The BEST and WORST of Each Species in Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing players can be picky people. I should know, I’m one of them! One thing we can be particularly picky about is the villagers in our towns and on our islands. With the latest New Horizons update, you can be sure to see plenty of strange characters walking around your island. But which of these am I excited to see, and which ones will make me turn off the game for the day in fear of coming face to face with their god-awful designs? Let’s find out!

In this list, I’ll share my favourite design of each villager species, and my least favourite. Yep, I’ve got another list for you, and you’ll like it. You’re welcome!

*Disclaimer: I am not liable for any emotional damage as a result of your favourite character being listed as the worst of their species. Also, there will be a lot of cranky and lazy villagers.

Alligator

Best: Boots

I’d love to say this was a difficult decision to make, as I love so many of the alligator’s designs; however, Boots is my absolute baby. With his jester jersey, silly personality, and natural green colouring, this boy is peak design. He’s the perfect alligator to place within a swampy, mossy area of your island. Every play session of New Horizons results in a few trips to some mystery islands in hopes of finding Boots to replace Drago. Roswell would be here if Boots didn’t exist.

Worst: Alli

I’m not the biggest fan of makeup designs on villagers to begin with. Alli’s lipstick is fine (unlike some certain frog and monkey villagers), but the colours of her makeup clash with each other. I think if her lipstick were the same colour as her eyeshadow, then I wouldn’t mind her design so much. She’s also a snooty type villager, which, no thank you. I do have to admit, though, that I like the lighter blue and pink blush together. Gayle was super close to taking this spot.

Anteater

Best: Antonio

Antonio is a super sweet villager with one of the cutest designs I’ve ever seen. Some people may find the simple black dots for eyes a little creepy, but I think they’re just darling. His simple colour palette makes him perfect for anyone to appreciate. You could even get a black-and-grey tattoo of this guy without it looking a bit off. This chilled guy is just here for a good time, and luckily for this Anteater, being a lazy villager has its perks with the inevitable bugs flocking to his home.

Worst: Olaf

I do not like Olaf’s hair. I think that is the only reason he snagged this spot. His colouring is fine, his expression is great, but dude, the hair. It just looks greasy, which, I think, humans who use this styling do use grease to style it, but it’s not for me. Just imagining the texture makes my skin crawl. His smug personality doesn’t help much, though; it does fit his image.

Bear

Best: Teddy

There’s nothing better than a classic teddy bear. Teddy takes this a step further with his thick, blocky eyebrows. He looks so cuddly, and the slight gradient on his face is the perfect addition to not make him too plain and simple. Teddy is a jock; this personality can get quite annoying as they’re always talking about gains. Gym bros, am I right? But other than that, it’s no wonder why Teddy has appeared in every Animal Crossing game since the start.

Worst: Chow

I cannot with Chow. Who designed this? Was it one of the design team’s toddlers? I hope so, as that would be the only redeeming factor. Chow is a creepy-looking guy. The pink makes him look sunburnt, his grin with dozy eyes makes him look like he’s watching you through your bedroom window, hiding in a bush. I fully expected this guy to be a smug villager, but he’s cranky?! This is blasphemous and domestic terrorism on my grumpy old men. To top it all off, Chow’s zodiac sign is Cancer. I coincidentally can’t get along with many Cancers in my personal life.

Bird

Best: Peck

Peck’s little white eyes are just darling, aren’t they? He reminds me of The Legend of Zorro, just without a hat. He’s a jock, which fits perfectly with his image — if he were based on the popular swordsman. His colours aren’t too out there, which makes him a lovely candidate for a forest-themed island.

Worst: Jacob

Listen, I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for his colours, but this traffic light of a guy is hard to look at without shades. His pinprick eyes don’t do much for his design, either. Jacob isn’t the worst-designed villager overall; he’s just unfortunately the worst of the bird villagers. If his colours were a bit more muted and his eyes maybe a little larger, he’d not even be in this spot. There just aren’t any bad bird designs. Before any of you come for Jitters, don’t even try; you’ll never change my mind about loving the little junkie.

Bull

Best: Vic

Vic is a Viking, which is such a cool design for a bull. His hair and beard are subtle enough that they don’t look silly, and his eyes are placed perfectly on his head, unlike the next bull I’ll be talking about. Despite the big grin on his face, Vic is a cranky villager. I’ll tell you right here and now that many of my favourite villagers are grumpy old men, so don’t be surprised when you see a lot of them.

Worst: T-Bone

I have this thing about eyes. If they look wrong, the whole design looks wrong. If T-Bone’s eyes were lower on his head, or maybe a bit more expressive, T-Bone wouldn’t be here! He’d be perfectly fine! Coach would be here instead, but as it is, T-Bone is uncomfortable to look at to me. He was also a lazy villager before transitioning into a cranky villager; two of my favourites. It’s just. his. eyes.

Cat

Best: Punchy

It was difficult to choose between Punchy and Bob for this slot. I ultimately chose Punchy, as he’s not purple. I love a lazy cat villager — they remind me of my own, who comes and sleeps on my lap often. Punchy’s colours are really lovely, and the design isn’t too crazy. The bands of brown between his body and paw socks are a really sweet addition, and I may have to start searching for Punchy to join my island.

Worst: Tabby

Where do I begin with Tabby? Cute name, cute paw and tail socks, but the rest? Awful. Here’s the thing: although the orange and brown look good together, the pink cheeks are… a choice, and the purple eyeshadow comes from nowhere. The piggy nose is also??? I don’t get it. I’m not a huge fan of how AC designers make stripes, so they don’t help. I just wish she’d close her mouth, too. She’s a peppy villager, which isn’t too bad; however, they can get a bit annoying. I’m just sad that this is the representation that my orange tabby cat gets. Love her shirt, though.

Chicken

Best: Goose

There’s something funny about a chicken named Goose. What is better than a simple chicken? Not much, I’d argue, which is why Goose takes the top spot. Though when looking through the chickens throughout the series, I found Betty, who is a slightly brown chicken. Betty was removed from the series after the first game. This upset me, and we need more Betty representation. Bring Betty Back. But back to Goose; Goose is another jock, so having him run around your island would make it feel like you’re visiting your local farm. If Goose were on my island, I’d definitely give him his own vegetable patch.

Worst: Becky

Becky’s not bad, but she’s not great. I think it’s the lilac colour palette alongside the hair she has going on. Struggling to pick a chicken to be in this spot, unfortunately, Becky just happened to have Broffina beat by her hair… I mean a hair. I prefer Broffina’s eyes and colour palette. They’re both snooty, which isn’t great. I feel like I could be friends with Becky, regardless of her ranking.
