Cow

Best: Tipper
Similar to Goose, Tipper is your average cow design. I love a Holstein-Friesian, and seeing where their spots land is always fun. Seeing Tipper is making me want to start a farm-themed island, although the only thing throwing me off is the fact that she’s snooty. I for sure thought that she was normal or sisterly. There aren’t many cow villagers to choose from, though, so Tipper takes the top of the list.
Worst: Norma
I put off writing about Norma for as long as I could. She’s just so boring. Her particular shade of pink, too. It doesn’t appeal to me. Do you remember the Strawberry Cow trend from a few years ago? Norma wasn’t mentioned, and as a pink cow from Animal Crossing, she could’ve been the perfect candidate for gamers to pull up. She’s also a normal-type villager. A Normal-type named Norma. Very Creative.
Cub

Best: Murphy
Green teddy bear 🙂 I love this little guy, I just want to scoop him up and give him a cwtch. I could see Murphy on a fairytale-themed island with a picnic area set up outside his home. Just imagine if you used all of the mossy furniture and mushroom furniture, then made a little area for him that was magical enough for his image. Murphy is a cranky villager. It gives me huge Rumplestiltskin/Leprechaun vibes.
Worst: Judy
I’m ready for the pitchfork-wielding fans. I can’t stand this design. I thought I loved it when I first saw it, but it’s just ugly to me. It reminds me of a slushy, but when you’ve sucked all of the flavour out, it’s just pale-coloured ice. The eyes, too, are a pale imitation of anime/manga eyes. I feel like this design was created to appeal to five-year-old girls and Sailor Moon fans, but as a member of the latter community, it falls flat on its face. Judy is “cute”, and she knows it, hence why she’s a snooty villager. Get out of here, Judy.
Deer

Best: Beau
Beau is as beautiful as his name, and as a lazy villager, he’s not aware of it. My child has Beau on their island, and I find myself trying not to convince him to move to mine instead. I wouldn’t actually do that, as my child loves Beau more than anyone else! He’s perfectly simple, yet appealing to look at. Being a lazy guy definitely helps with his appeal, as who doesn’t love a child-like, pretty boy who you’d adopt as a son?
Worst: Deirdre
Another victim of questionable makeup choices, Deirdre would be fine if not for her white lipstick and pink blush. I love her fur colouring and especially the tips of her ears. Deirdre is a sisterly villager, which benefits her, but the main thing that comes to her detriment is her choice in makeup. Also, she has eyebrows. Do deer have eyebrows?
Dog

Best: Butch
This cranky guy is the perfect candidate for a city-inspired island. I could totally see someone walking a dog that looks exactly like Butch, with the same name, too. There’s not much else to say about Butch, other than he’s the epitome of “man’s best friend”.
Worst: Marcel
I’m scared of clowns, and mimes come under that category. Cookie was really close to being here, then I scrolled down and saw Marcel. I feel like he could be really cute if not for the face paint. His eyes and whiskers are cute, but the mouth and white face paint really do throw me off. I love his fur colour, and the white tips of his feet and tail are really sweet. The fact that he’s a lazy villager helps him tons. I just can’t get over the main design of him being a mime.
Duck

Best: Bill
I love the colour of Bill’s feathers. The chestnutty colour is different enough to seem unnatural, but not too out-there that it hurts your eyes. His big, wide eyes are adorable, and I can imagine many children flocking to this guy, choosing him as their favourite villager, especially since he’s a jock and can be on your island from the beginning. Bill’s little curly fringe is just too cute, securing him the top spot in the duck category.
Worst: Deena
Surprisingly, the makeup is not my issue with Deena. Unsurprisingly, it’s her eyes. I know this seems silly, as they’re very similar to Bill’s, but the slight upwards offset of her pupils? It makes her look like she’s just staring at her fringe. Speaking of her fringe, I think Deena either needs to grow her hair out a bit or brave the shave.
Eagle

Best: Avery
It was difficult to choose a top eagle, but ultimately, Avery takes the top spot. Avery speaks like he’s from the Wild West, but his design evokes Peruvian culture. This gives him his lovely patterns and colourways. He’s another grumpy old man, which makes him incredibly lovable. This, though, isn’t surprising, as a lot of the eagles are cranky villagers.
Worst: Quinn
We have an issue here where I don’t necessarily dislike any of the eagles’ designs. I actually quite like Quinn, but unfortunately, I couldn’t justify putting anyone else at the bottom. She is just ever so slightly forgettable, though.
Elephant

Best: Cyd
Possibly one of the only brightly coloured villagers among my favourites, Cyd is very much a punky elephant. Introduced in New Horizons, this elephant is based on infamous punk rocker Sid Vicious, which makes his cranky personality make a whole lot of sense. I love Cyd’s eyes, and the purple hair pairs well with his dark red skin. The black gradients on his ears and limbs are also really cool to look at.
Worst: Chai
I believe Chai is the only amiibo-exclusive villager on this list. As much as I love Cinnamoroll, I really don’t get this design. The colour scheme is perfectly fine, but what on Earth is with the teacup on her head? Teacup? Fine. Wearing it on her head, though? Luckily, you can gift her a hat, and she will replace it with the gift. If you were wondering, Étoile is my favourite villager from the Sanrio collab.
