The BEST and WORST of Each Species in Animal Crossing

Koala

Best: Gonzo

Ah, it’s my good mate, Gonzo. This naturally coloured koala is one of my favourite villagers currently residing on my island. He calls me “mate”, and he’s always in his garden, sniffing the flowers and sitting on his bench. This cranky man doesn’t seem too cranky living next door to Melba, and in previous games, he’s scared of the Monster Mask. Poor guy. I wholeheartedly love Gonzo, and he’s definitely one of my favourite villagers in the series. I’m also rather fond of the muppet of the same name.

Worst: Canberra

I want to love Canberra. She has all the right things going for her: a sisterly personality, a lovely orange tone, and her hair isn’t offensive… Hell, she’s even wearing a green striped shirt! Canberra, honey, close your eyes slightly. If Canberra wasn’t in such a state of constant shock, she wouldn’t beeee heeereeeee (Faith or Alice would). This isn’t exactly fair, though, as I love all of the koala.

Lion

Best: Leopold

Do you remember Parsley the Lion? Leopold reminds me so much of him that he skyrocketed to this spot. Originally a jock villager, Leopold is now a smug villager, which I think suits him much more. With his studious personality, his Japanese name (translation of “Teacher”) makes so much sense, alongside his goal of becoming a professor and his education hobby. This makes his initial catchphrase of “lion cub” absolutely darling, and of course, I’d love a professor like Leopold.

Worst: Rory

A lot of these entries are subjective. It’s really hard to pick a least favourite when most Animal Crossing characters are adorable. That being said, I don’t like the fact that Rory loses his curls as his fur grows away from his face. Can you imagine if his mane was also curly? Adorable! He is a jock, though, which, personally, I’d see him as a cranky boy.

Monkey

Best: Nana

I… don’t like the monkeys. Nana is the least offensive to my eyes, and she’s a normal villager, so she’s not insufferable. I’d still replace her at the first chance I got, though.

Worst: Elise

Elise is the neighbour on your street who sits in their garden, chain-smoking between their vapes, and going to the shop in her grey dressing gown that was originally white. That is, if she can’t swindle one of her 6 kids to go for her. She’s a snooty villager with no right to be so, and her lip filler is offensive. Maybe if she had smaller lips and different specs, she’d look okay, but the snootiness is unneeded. Be better, Elise.

Mouse

Best: Broccolo

Let me start by saying that the mice are uuug-lay; however, Broccolo does make me smile when I see him. His silly little hair, simple eyes, and goofy smile are perfect against his childlike demeanour. I love the blue of his fur with the pink in his ears, and despite his lazy nature, I would love to see him doing the morning exercises at residential services. I have a soft spot for Broccolo, and I’m not sure why. Maybe he just reminds me of a small child, and my maternal instincts are kicking in.

Worst: Candi

I can’t tell whether Candi’s eyes are the black and white spots on her head or the big red spots where her actual eyes should be. I think it’s the former. Imagine Candi without the black eyes, and everything else stays the same. Fine! Cute, even! But as she is right now, she creeps me out. Especially with her peppy personality. This thing running at you with all the energy in the world would be terrifying.

Octopus

Best: Zucker

Zucker: the German word for “Sugar” (although he resembles takoyaki), also sounds like sucker, a-la octopi’s tentacles. There’s also something fun about a lazy villager who always talks about food, looking like food. Zucker is definitely the cutest octopus in the series, and his catchphrase is “bloop”. Let me repeat that: His catchphrase is “bloop”. Aahhh, so sweet! He’s a man of mystery, as seen in his favourite song “Spring Blossoms”, which is a secret song. But you didn’t hear that here.

Worst: Marina

I like all of the octopi. If I found Marina on a mystery island, I’d be excited. That being said, I don’t like her hair that much. That’s all. Moving on.

Ostrich

Best: Julia

I prefer Julia’s initial personality, which was peppy, rather than her newer one: snooty. That being said, Julia is visually appealing and takes the form of a male peafowl. I’m such a fan of peafowl; they’re lovely to watch from afar, and they’re so graceful. Maybe this is the reason that I chose Julia over the others; however, it was a very close call between a few of the ostriches.

Worst: Queenie

We have the same issue as the octopi, here. I like all of the ostriches, but Queenie falls at the bottom of them all. I think it’s her hair? I’m not sure.

Penguin

Best: Boomer

This was another difficult decision. I love so many of the penguins, including Roald, Cube, and especially Wade. However, upon looking at the list of the penguin villagers, I couldn’t help but be drawn towards Boomer. His silly little aviator cap and his initial clothing are so cute against his feather colour, and he’s got those thick eye lines that I love. Boomer is a lazy villager, which, as we’ve established, is the best kind of villagers, though I think I would prefer him to be a cranky guy.

Worst: Flo

I love Flo’s eyes. Unfortunately, her emo fringe and her shirt are a bit too much for me. This is coming from someone who probably wore this exact fit at some point. I think her colouring ending right under her top beak makes her look like she has a beard, too. Same, girl. If her fringe was centred, pointing directly down instead of to the side, and her chin colouring was lower, she’d look cool.
