Featuring single-player and multiplayer modes, the co-op experience based on Sam Raimi’s horror masterpiece is available on Playstation, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store
The Evil Dead was a 1981 film written and directed by Sam Raimi (who also directed Drag Me To Hell, the first Spider-Man trilogy, and more recently, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and starring Bruce Campbell. In it, 5 college students have a vacation in a cabin in Tennesee. They soon find out that the cabin houses the Necronomicon, the book of the dead. As the protagonists slowly lose themselves to the evil influence of the cabin, it is soon up to Ash Williams, played by Campbell, to find a way to fend off the demonic onslaught.
Seamlessly melding humour and over-the-top camp with genuine terror and practical special effects, it is commonly cited as one of the greatest horror films of all time. It had multiple sequels, a follow-up television series, comic books, and a pervasive presence in pop culture with references being found in anything from cartoons like The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy to more recent attempts at horror, like 2020’s Lovecraft Country. The franchise has also had several video games, and the series’ main character Ash has also appeared in Poker Night 2.
The series is now available to play on current generation consoles. Evil Dead: The Game is the latest of several PVP games utilising horror franchises, like Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game. Promising the “ultimate Evil Dead action experience”, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of characters from The Evil Dead lore to play as in both single-player and multiplayer, such as Ash, Annie (from Evil Dead II), Lord Arthur (from the third film, Army of Darkness) and Pablo (from the tv show, Ash vs The Evil Dead). Assembling a team of four, you’ll be tasked with killing demonic zombies called deadites before they kill you. There are several character classes to level up and 25 weapons to choose from including the iconic boomstick and chainsaw. You’ll also be able to play as the titular “Evil Dead” itself. Playing as the Kandarian demon lets you troll, terrorise and eventually steal the souls of the good guys!
In addition, there is also Evil Dead: The Game Deluxe Edition, which comes with Season Pass 1. This includes ‘The Classic Bundle’ which contains several costumes for the characters, and the next three DLC packs which will include even more characters and cosmetics.
If you’re a Steam die hard, you can take comfort in knowing you can watch Ash vs The Evil Dead for the measly price of… £30.99!? Not groovy.
