A Quick Site Update: We’re Not Dead, Yet

THUMBNAIL FOR SITE UPDATE ARTICLE

Hello reader. Kept you waiting, huh? Yep, it’s been 3 months since we posted; we kicked off our 6th anniversary and then went dark. So, you might be wondering – what happened? Are we dead? Well, that’s not a simple answer. I can only speak for myself on this matter. I’ll get into what’s going on shortly, but I wanted to confirm with a quick statement. We are not dead. We have content in the pipeline, and we should be back relatively soon with a new article for you.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s get into what happened. In January 2025, I decided to return to regularly writing on the site after a hiatus. The issue I had fundamentally was that news and trend chasing just wasn’t appealing to me. I stopped getting a sense of satisfaction out of it and got burnt out fast. As you’ve probably noticed by our recent output, our content is much more evergreen now. They’re articles that you don’t need to be in the moment to read, and can be mostly relevant forever.

Return of the Writing

So I returned, with a new mindset, new content and lots of motivation, and for 18 months that remained true. We nearly published every week for 75 weeks in a row, which is genuinely insane. If you don’t know, this is a hobby for us; we all have full-time gigs outside of managing the site. We also don’t get paid to write; all of this is 100% a passion project and something we do for the love of the game. I think that might affect motivation sometimes. It’s hard to want to do something for no returns.

Back in our early years, we’d be lucky to get 30 views in a week, and now and again one article would take off. This, we believe, was due to a specific author already having an audience and their work being shared to said audience kept it high in rankings. However, the “50 games” listicle, came into being with the hard work of all of the team and blew up. Our 50 PS2 games article continues to get thousands of views a month. This was deeply motivating, and a few of our other articles have shared that success.

We learnt SEO, improved older articles, and the site is performing better than ever. So, why did we stop again? Well, for me at least, it comes down to circumstances. My life is pretty turbulent right now, and finding the time for writing is tough. I started video content as a side hobby, but even that has suffered from my recent changes. This, and the fact that the world is in an awful state. The existential anxiety has been debilitating.

Misery

It’s safe to assume I’m not alone in the demotivation. We’ve even lost an author in the past few months (they left the site, not died). As stated in the intro, I can’t speak for everyone on the site, but personally I am going to try and commit to one article a month to stop the site fading into obscurity. In these tumultious times of cyberpsychosis, division, and scarcity, it’s more important now than ever to support the little guy. If you enjoy our content, even a little, please bookmark our website and visit every now and again.

Time and motivation will come, but until then, try and take some enjoyment of the games that bring you joy

I hope that one day we can return to an article every 2 weeks, but right now, expect 5 more articles this year. I know it’s less than one a week, but hopefully they satiate your want for independent media journalism. Thanks for the last 6 years; truly, writing here has been a fantastic creative outlet, and I’m so happy to have been able to do this for as long as we have. See you in the near future with a new article! Also, I have a YouTube Channel now if that piques your interest.

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in writing or editing as a hobby, we are looking for new writers. Join our Discord to apply, and we can start the conversation!
