Pokémon Day 2025: Our Favourites

As someone who has only played 5 different generations of Pokémon, I have limited knowledge of the series these days. I took a break in the middle. Sorry to all you Gen IV stans. Luckily, Pokémon still fills a huge chunk of nostalgia for me and I’m getting taught about the generations I missed daily by my child and Poké-obsessed sibling. These are my picks for my favourites in the Pokémon game series.

Pokémon
Listen- I’m an indecisive person. Picking just one Pokémon as my favourite is literally impossible and so, I will give you my ideal team instead. Also, just for reference I will NOT be battling with my babies, just living our cosy, cottagecore-esque lifestyle. This is how I imagine my favourite Pokémon:

First up, we have our resident gardener and pollinator, Bulbasaur. His name is Spud and he enjoys a good cuddle after doing his daily rounds of tending to his garden. His favourite crops he has grown are his Starf Berries as they took a long time but were very juicy, though the pesky Ledyba did rather annoy him. Despite being a good boy and never wanting to get into any trouble, his best buds are his watering pals who we have next on our list.

Wooper and Totodile are the best of friends, along with Spud. This daring duo love to play and get into shenanigans with each other, causing a lot of trouble for the rest of our crew.
Beep, our Wooper is a bit silly, kind of forgetful and just tends to follow in Crunchie’s footsteps. She is creative in ways that no one has ever seen, and by that I mean that she gets trapped in places such as the chimney flue. No one knows how she got up there.
The little bad boy of our family, Crunchie is always getting into places he shouldn’t and interfering with everyone’s workload, sometimes making their jobs 10 times harder. Despite this, he has a heart of pure gold and loves to cuddle up with Spud and Beep at the end of the day.
These troublesome twosome tend to their best bud’s garden, watering all of his seedlings and ensuring they have enough water to keep them growing healthy and fighting fit.

By making sure that our last entries are taking part in our off-the-grid lifestyle, Vaporeon is by far the most responsible of our team. Neptune is the “nanny” of our team, making sure that everyone is clean and safe from bacteria but he also loves to unwind in the local lake. Neptune is a slight diva and quite a germaphobe to boot. His paws are never dirty and he tries to stay away from Spud as much as he can. No one knows why he is afraid of dirt and bacteria but it might be due to Shani‘s mysterious discolouration on her tummy.

Shuckle has an anomaly on the underside of her shell. She tries to hide it as much as she can but it doesn’t seem like she’ll be able to stop the blue splotches from spreading for much longer. Though she tries to distance herself from the others, she still uses Spud’s harvest to make delicious juice inside of her shell for the group. Shani loves scouting for cool-looking rocks and collects the geodes she finds in the nearby coves. Her favourite days are our planned days out to the beach so she can explore the caves and be in her element.

Dreepy is the newest member of our family. Dippy just showed up one day after following Neptune home from the lake and he hasn’t left since. Despite this, he fits right in and scouts the surrounding area for any dangers or pesky Ledyba. His blank stare is unusually soft and comforting for some of the members, but Crunchie does get a bit intimidated by it. When we wake in the morning, the living areas have been cleared of clutter and mess. Neptune highly appreciates this but does not know how it happens. I suspect it’s Dippy’s doing.

Game
Pokémon Channel is by far my favourite Pokémon game even if it is just a side entry. Between the collection aspect on the shopping channel, the enhanced personalities of the Pokémon and the exclusivity of watching the ‘Pichu Bros in Party Panic’ episode, Pokémon Channel has ingrained itself into my very soul. I think about this game at least once a month and I am currently struggling in a life without the game. (Thank you to my brother who lost our copy >_>) No other game has quite hit the spot like this game did. If you haven’t played it and you have the ability to, I would highly recommend you give it a go. This game genuinely makes me cry because the sense of nostalgia is so strong.

NPC
I know that we all love Larry, and I know that if he ceased to exist after his introduction, we would all be lost in a senseless life. That being said, I will not crown him as my favourite NPC. No, the winner of this title is in fact Archie, the leader of Team Aqua. Archie is just a sweetie of a bloke. His entire goal is to get humans and Pokémon to get along by expanding the sea? I don’t get it, but he seems like his heart is in the right place. He hates human pollution, which, same, and is very hell-bent on bettering the lives of Pokémon. He has a strong sense of self and honestly? His outfit is so cool. When I first saw him at age 7, I wanted to marry the water man.

Type
Grass-type Pokémon tend to be my favourite type. I’m unsure why but it might stem from Bulbasaur being one of my favourite lil’ guys. It probably helps that they’re strong against Rock-type Pokémon and Water-type Pokémon which are usually the first two gym types in each game I played.

Location
Whilst Azalea, Ballonlea and Agate Village are beautiful areas in the Pokémon franchise, I absolutely adore a good gimmick town. Fallarbor Town and Route 113 in Hoenn are definitely my favourite. I remember spending hours walking through the ashy grass, making patterns and “helping” the wild Pokémon to not suffocate. This is also where we get to see Spinda for the first time and all of its varying patterns. Such a cutie! Fallarbor is definitely the turning point in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald’s story for me which makes the town all the more iconic.

Pokémon:
Cyndaquil was the first Pokemon I ever picked when I got to play Pokémon Silver on my grandparent’s Gameboy Colour. He is happy chilling in “Pokemon Home” now. Sentret was the first Pokemon I caught in that same version of Silver and evolved into Furret who was so cute!! Other than that Quagsire is a bit of a derp and I love him for that, Dragonite is always good in a fight, and Flygon’s design is super cool. And you can’t go wrong with the Eeveelutions.

Game:
Silver was the first Pokemon game I played and although I was too young to understand what I was doing, I had so much fun.

Sapphire was another fav of mine as I could understand more of what was going on and what to do, although I struggled with type matchups, I had fun trying to remember them. I also remember playing it in the car on holidays with my Family.

NPC:
Lance, Jasmine, Miror B, Mars, Bianca, Drayden

Type:
Fire, Grass and Dragon

Location:
It was during Black and White that the games started to go for more of a 3D graphic style with more colours and shading and growing up with the more flat style, I was so amazed seeing Castelia City for the first time and walking over Skyarrow Bridge in its 3D, camera panning style. It just blew my tiny mind XD

Lumiose City from X and Y was the other visually mind-blowing location I remember as I was still getting used to the non-grid-based movement system, which was already a huge change to what I was used to and then to have another massive city to rollerblade around on was so fun. Lumiose City was also the place where I started getting into Pokemon Breeding as you could hold a direction and skate around the central power effortlessly to hatch eggs.

Hopefully, ZA will show Lumiose City in a whole new immersive light.

Pokémon: Skeledirge

Skeledirge is one of the coolest I have seen during my short time with the franchise (Scarlet being the first Pokémon game I’ve properly dug into). A singing crocodile Pokémon is one of the strangest combos I’ve ever seen. Although there is probably something more bizarre out there. I also enjoy using Cyclizar and Pyroar. One looks like a bike the other a Lion XD.

Game: Pokémon Scarlet

While this game gets a bad rap due to poor performance and a bland open world. It’s the only one I’ve dug my teeth into and so far as a beginner this game seems fairly okay. I’ll soon be looking at Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Ruby next so hopefully if we do this article again my answer will be completely different.

NPC: Nobody sticks out to be honest. Hopefully, the other games will have better characters. Maybe we’ll stream the other games on Twitch. (Kane *cough*)

Type: Fire, Fighting, Darkness. It just works, I have no idea why.

Location: Glaseado Mountain is one of the better and more interesting areas in the game by far. The mountain itself boasts the highest peak in Paldea. The gym battle is pretty fun too and can be challenging if you aren’t prepared.

That’s All Folks!

And that’s this year’s definitive list of Pokémon stuff that the staff at Underlevelled love. Riley and the gang discovered a lot about themselves and each other during this fateful undertaking. But what adventures and battles lie in store for them in the days ahead? What friends will they make and what steps will they take? Tune in and join the adventure to find out!

Video game completionist and 3D platformer connoisseur, Riley is a fan of the whimsical frenzy of bright and colourful characters that blessed us in the late 90's. Their favourite game's are Spyro, Persona 5 and Super Mario Sunshine.
