Instrumental psych-rock duo Movie Club, consisting of drummer Jessamyn Violet and guitarist Vince Cuneo, have been on my radar for quite some time. Psychodelic rock being my bread and butter (see my King Gizzard articles) I’m always looking for new bands that push the envelope in different directions. I’m happy to report that Movie Club has a modest but strong back catalogue of tracks. They’re stylish, fresh and have great taste in suits. These cool cats are definitely ones to watch.
The hot new track, ‘Trap Door,’ is accompanied by a trippy and visually enchanting music video. Classic 1950s red balloon motifs are used, but with a twist. The trope is reversed, and instead we see wildly differing colours of balloons matching the increasingly bizarre and surreal backdrops. Focussed rock-style drumming complements the strong blazing guitar perfectly, keeping the listener wanting more long after the song ends.
‘Trap Door’ is a teaser for the up and coming record Fangtooth. Fangtooth has a strong pedigree; it was mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys), recorded by Jeff Thompson and mixed by Mark Rains (Paranoyds, Death Valley Girls). ‘Trap Door’ features Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie) on bass and David Ralicke (Dengue Fever) on flute. Fangtooth will be released on the 10th of August this year, so set it in your calendars. I’ve had a cheeky little early listen, and let me tell you it’s pretty fantastic.
