Meet the Author – Riley
Hey I’m Riley, I’m a content creator here at Underlevelled, I stream on our Twitch, write articles, run the Instagram account, the discord server and do a little image editing from time to time. I’m an ideas person, I have a lot of things pop into my head that may be overly ambitious but not all of these will ever see the light of day. I’ve been here since the beginning, and hopefully will continue to be here till the heat death of the site.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of digital media?
I enjoy photography and I work with and maintain large scale enterprise networks. I’m a tech enthusiast but this often overlaps with my job and I use a lot of emerging technologies, especially in networking and virtual process hosting. I’m also a master at spreadsheets, I can make an excel document literally do anything, don’t test me.
What are your favourite gaming genres?
I am known around these parts as the 3D Platforming guy, and that’s not by accident, I love ’em to death and have played a lot of them (for real if you hear of any emerging indie 3D Platformers PLEASE let me know!). But I also enjoy JRPGs, action adventure games and narrative adventure games. I am also a huge fan of kart racers and arcade racing games, there’s something viscerally fun about blazing at high speed with quirky characters and mechanics.
What are your favourite games?
It’s almost impossible to narrow down, so here are ten of my favourites for a general taste profile; Spyro the Dragon, Persona 5 Royal, Super Mario Sunshine, Pokémon Black 2, Splatoon, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Final Fantasy IX, Steins;Gate and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
What are your favourite movies?
Movies are difficult with me, I like a lot of different things. Mostly, I enjoy the field of animation. The method, the result and the immense amount of work needed to get a project done is so awe inspiring and interesting to me.
I do have favourite movies though. Everything Everywhere All At Once is an incredibly well written and masterfully executed multiverse story. With character motivations you care about and a plot that keeps on giving on several re-watches. I also love the movie Chronicle, which is a found footage super power movie where the characters have a realistic response to gaining powers. It tackles how that can warp and twist in someone with a troubled home life and the juggle between power and emotion. The Butterfly Effect is also an old favourite, demonstrating on how the smallest decisions we make can have profound and huge impacts on the future.
I also enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Yes Man, The Truman Show, Groundhog Day, The Girl That Leapt Through Time, Weathering With You, Howl’s Moving Castle and Toy Story 2. If its got a time loop, I’m there!
What are your favourite music genres and artists?
I am an old-school emo kid, lover of emo, pop punk, metalcore and post-hardcore. But I’ll happily listen to most music. Some notable artists are: Bullet for My Valentine, Sleeping with Sirens, Bring Me the Horizon, Mayday Parade, As December Falls, A Day to Remember, Emarosa, Chiodos, Dangerkids and D.R.U.G.S.
