This week, the Legend of Zelda series turns 40 years old. We could’ve done a lot for this anniversary; reminiscing about our favourite games, conspiring about the upcoming movie, or even writing a whole thesis on why the Koroks are little… seeds…
But worry not, my fellow fashionistas! I swooped in like a loftwing, snagged this week’s article out of the grips of the guys of Underlevelled to bring you a compilation of the prettiest outfits our Princess of Hyrule has ever worn. From chiffon to leather boots, (every incarnation of) Princess Zelda is no stranger to the fashion world. This is depicted well within the love and care each artist and character designer has shown in their creations. So, without further ado, let’s head into our first category.
Disclaimer: This is a personal opinion, and the compilation will not include Sheik’s nor Tetra’s outfits. Outfits within each category will not be ordered from worst to best or vice versa.
Did a Hinox Design This?
Majora’s Mask

We don’t see Princess Zelda much in Majora’s Mask, which means we don’t have a lot to go on… Her entire outfit is never seen, and is only seen in greyscale. This is a shame, as it seems like the overall design could’ve been lovely. It’s very reminiscent of the Ocarina of Time outfit.
The Crystal Trap
Next up, we have the very questionable outfit from The Crystal Trap. Look, I know dresses aren’t very practical for adventuring, but this outfit is God-awful. The plain leggings paired with the thigh-high boots and puff sleeves are definitely a choice that should’ve had a second opinion. All of this, along with more bling than even Elizabeth Taylor, is astounding. The only redeeming feature is that it doesn’t have clashing colours, but that’s not exactly hard to avoid in a monochrome book.

The Mirage Castle Gamebook

I’m not sure whether this is Zelda or Sailor Mars’s little sister. Either way, the fit is incredibly plain and quite juvenile. The bangs are cute, though.
The Legend of Zelda
One of the original designs for the beloved princess, and boy, am I glad they gave her an overhaul. This dress looks like Cinderella’s mother’s gown, and not in a good way. Reminiscent of Disney’s Ariel at her dinner with Prince Eric, this whole shape makes me gag more than King Dodongo on one of Link’s bombs.

The Adventure of Link (Ranmaru)

Okay, I’ll admit it. She do be kinda cute. However, this isn’t exactly the style I’d think of when someone mentions someone worthy of the Triforce of Wisdom, nor a princess. She looks more like a princess’s handmaiden.
Echoes of Wisdom
One thing Nintendo has been doing lately is chibifying already-known and loved characters. It works sometimes, but this is an example of when it doesn’t. This outfit is way too simple, causing this particular look to fall within the lowest ranks.

The Awakening of Link

Oh God, it’s back! This time with an even worse tiara and silhouette. Pairing hot pink and white should be considered a jailtime-worthy crime. The ruffles being only at the very bottom of the dress is horrendous, and the ginger curls? Listen, I usually love curly, ginger hair… This styling, though? I have no words.
The Legend of Zelda TV Show
Surprisingly enough, this outfit isn’t the absolute worst in my mind. It is, however, still not good. Zelda kind of looks like a hippy tied to a tree in protest. Especially in this image. The earrings are very Princess Toadstool, and unfortunately, so is the hair. I’m not too fond of Peach. But hey, I guess at least there’s some layering going on.
